At last month’s Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, the winner of Alibi’s search for a new crime writer was announced. The culmination of the search, which was launched at the beginning of the year, ended with a short yet perfectly formed ceremony attended by the likes of Stuart MacBride and R.J. Ellory.
Alibi TV in partnership with HarperCollins, TV Times, the Reading Agency and the festival started a hunt to find a new voice in crime fiction back in January. Entrants were tasked with putting together a short story no longer than 5,000 words that had to start with the opening line provided by the rather wonderful Stuart MacBride, chair of this year’s festival.
‘In my experience, those who beg for mercy seldom deserve it’
Armed with the opening line, pens were put to paper and fingers to keyboards to produce a fantastic selection of stories. There was an overwhelming response to the competition with over 700 stories submitted. After a public and judges vote the winner was announced as David Jack Smith with his tale FOX.
